Leadership

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

Walk the Walk...

For this week I think I am going to combine my favorite quote and the "Question Of The Week" into the same post. So, all you need do is list your own favorite quote from the chapter and answer the question in the same "comment".

Hopefully that makes sense...

"Actions trump words, and your values must be visible if they are to have an impact on those you lead... Your behavior as a leader - WHAT YOU DO - creates the environment in which the team functions." (pp 74-75)

It took me too long to realize that those I was striving to lead followed best when they saw in me an example worth following. Through HS and into college I thought that because of my position as long as I told people what needed to be done they would take my word for it and do it. Sometimes they did, but the more I was put into a position of leadership the more I realized the truth in the old adage "Your actions speak louder than your words". It was amazing to me to see that if I took the initiative and did what needed to be done to the best of my ability, those I was leading would usually do the same. However if I would merely tell those I was leading to do what needed to be done, they would only contribute the amount of effort they saw me putting in.

What I said had some impact, and what you say will too. Words can be powerful motivators, but without the actions to back them they are powerful for only a very short time. To have a lasting impact (ie throughout the season, or throughout the year) your actions must be something others can look to as an example.

So that brings me to my question...

In whatever arena you're going to be participating (you may have to answer this differently if you are involved in multiple venues) 1. What are two or three SPECIFIC GOALS you want those you are leading to achieve, and 2. what are some SPECIFIC ACTIONS that will help guide those you are leading to those goals?

Have a good week!

Chris

  1. Something that I found important this week is in the sub-section 'Attitude and Conduct'. I find them all pretty important but the one most significant to me when you are playing is number 5:

"Truly believe that you are better than your oppponent in knowledge if the game, in condition, and in fighting spirit and you will be mighty difficult to defeat."

I think a leader needs to be able to have this attitude and not look at the odds that are against them. If a leader has this attitude, then they are better able to encourage those who they are leading who may be discouraged because they believe it themselves. They are more comfortable and relaxed and the rest of the team will take up this attitude as well.

    Answers to Question:
Goals I want people I'm leading to achieve are to 1.)be satisfied with the job that they did because they gave it there all 2.)be able to look back at the end of the season and say wow that was a great experience i learned so much

Inorder for people to achieve these goals I plan on 1.)doing my best to give everything my complete effort and being satisfied with it 2.)making sure that I teach the girls all I can and making the season a good one

  2. When talking about leadership its important to set a good example through character. "Succesful leadershipis not about beingtough or soft, sensitive or assertive, but about a set of attributes. First and foremost is character." Although it's important to know what you're talking about its also very important that the team trusts and respects you. Your actions say alot about who you are and will either attract people or push them away.

I want those I am leading to always do there best even when all odds are against us. Effort and heart can bring you back when you're down. I also want them to keep their heads up when were down. I have seen it happen so many times that even a team that isn't amazing will pull far ahead because the other team gives up.

My personal goals are to lead fairly and efficiently nd to always do my best. I also want to do all i can for this season to be a great one.

  3. Being a leader isn't about being the boss. "Leadership is about more than just forcing people to do what you say. A prison guard does that. a good leader creates belief-in the leader's philosophy, in the organization, in the mission." A leader who just tells those under him what to do won't be helping them but instead, could be making them dependent on them to know what to do. To be a good leader, you should explain why you must do something to help everyone improve. Also, during a game you must never give up. If you do, then those you are leading will think it is ok for them to give up and if that happens, you will not get very far.

My goals for those I am leading are to learn as much as they can, have a great year and to come back next year and continue to improve.

To help these goals to be accomplished, I will do anything I can to teach them and help them improve and try to have fun through the season and try to avoid any unwanted drama and yelling on the court. I will also encourage them.
