As leaders it will be important for us to have a good definition of success that you can use as a measure for your activities through out the year.
I personally like Coach Wooden's definition on page 10: "Making the complete effort to maximize your abilities, skills, and potential in whatever circumstances - good or bad - may exist"
In the next paragraph he separates this definition of success from our present cultures definition: "Sometimes the competition you face will be bigger or stronger, more experienced or better [equipped]. Regardless of the situation you face as a leader, you must believe and teach those under your leadership that success is theirs when together you summon the will to put forth EVERYTHING you have."
So at the end of the day can you win a match and be unsuccessful? Can you lose a match and come away with your head held high? The answer to both ought to be yes if your goal is giving everything you're involved in your very best effort...
Commit to excellence. Be successful.

Leadership
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

On page 7, he wrote in his journal, “The road is better than the inn”. It immediately reminded me of the one quote I seem to always read when I pass by it in the halls of JI, “Success is a journey, not a destination”. It teaches me that I always need to strive, because I can always improve and therefore become better. A leader must show determination to improve if she wishes to set a good model for her peers. And it is definitely possibly to win and still be unsuccessful. In this day and age of such strong competitive spirit, some people will do anything to win. The same goes for someone who is sucessful even if they do lose. If someone tried their hardest and did their best then they still won even if they were not victorious.
ReplyDelete"Success is a journey, not a destination" ... I really like that!
ReplyDeleteWhile reading, something that really jumped out at me as far as volleyball goes was Enthusiasm. I think this is so important for us to have on the court, because otherwise we end up getting smashed.
ReplyDeleteLike coach wooden said (not exact quote), "it will carry us over in the tough moments of the game. It has to be real not faked."
I especially think the "it has to be real, not faked" part is important. Too many times I hear us say how much we want to win and how much we love the game, but our actions don't show it: especially when we turn around and are complaining at practice how we don't wanna be there. We honestly have to feel it. And I'm not saying that means "jumping up and down making noise" but seriously we need to be happy that we get to play and enjoy playing.
As a leader, "this attitude is contagious, and people under your leadership will follow."
On page 6 coach wooden talks about something his father taught him, "Johnny, work hard to get as good as you can get. Do that and you may call yourself a success. Do less and you've fallen short." I agree completely. You can't be better than your effort, and if your effort is weak or fake then you let yourself and your team down. However, if you work to improve and become the best you can be, then you benefit everyone, but most of all, yourself. "success is peace of mind which is knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable."

ReplyDeleteI posted for basketball this same quote but my evaluation of it is different.
"Work without joy is drudgery."
Last year for volleyball I believe in most cases we were enthusiastic. As a result JV had many wins. I believe our enthusiasm played a large role in our wins, because instead of getting angry, or stressed, we stayed serious and enthusiastic and tried to remember that we weren't going to be perfect. Thanks to this we only lost two games in the whole season, both against the same team. Hopefully we will be able to continue to incorporate this in our game and reach yet another good season.
On page 13, Wooden talks about working together as a team, "We stuck together, worked hard, ignored what was beyond our control, and perfected-or tried hard to-those things that were under our control. Our team achieved sucess." This quote stood out to me because there are many times when we have to deal with poor calls in volleyball but it can't be helped. There were many games last year that we had to deal with this, especially at the competitions we went to, but we worked through it and won most of our games. Hopefully, this coming year will be even better as we continue to grow as a team.
